1. Arabic Dictation App

Want to train your ears to hearing the Arabic letters? This app (runs on your webbrowser) allows you to do just that. You select the letters you want to practice identifying, the app then let’s you hear words containing those letters and has you spell them.

2. OERabic Roots and Routes

A thematically organised learning resource that helps build your vocabulary while highlighting that the majority of Arabic words derive from three-letter roots.

3. ‘Countdown’ at home

Brits will be familiar with this decades old game show involving word and number tasks. For those who aren’t, contestants in each episode compete in three game types:

(1) letter rounds, where the contestants try to make the longest word possible from nine letters chosen randomly by vowels or consonants;

(2) number rounds, in which the contestants use arithmetic to reach a random target number from six other numbers;

and (3) the conundrum, a buzzer round in which the contestants compete to solve a nine-letter anagram.

With the tools below you can include a little (minimum prep) ‘Countdown‘ fun as a warmer to your homeschool day. We like to write one letter, number or anagram challenge on our whiteboard and try to solve it individually and then share and compare our answers as a family.

Learnhip: Countdown Letter Generator for ‘traditional’ letter rounds. You can select up to 10 letters.

Spelling Bee: This NYT puzzle challenges you how many words you can make with 7 set letters. Letters may be used more than once. We use this one to find anagrams.

Word Finder: This is a unique word search tool, which finds all possible words made up of the letters you input and is handy for checking anagrams and longest words. There is also a nice section on idioms for kids.

Digits: The NYT is also currently doing a beta run of a maths puzzle which can be used to supply the digits for the numbers round.

4. The B on your Thumb – 60 poems to boost reading and spelling‘ by Colette Hiller and Tor Freeman

This book contains 60 illustrated rhymes that ‘teach’ and play with a specific sound, spelling or rule. A parent guide on how to use the book and extensive activities for children to build on their learning are included.
